Indian killed by bullets fired by Jordanian security forces while trying to cross the border
Jordanian security personnel shot an Indian citizen when he was trying to enter another country illegally. The man died in the incident. The Indian Embassy in Jordan said, ‘We have come to know about the tragic death of an Indian citizen under unfortunate circumstances. We are in touch with the local authorities and are taking action on the matter. We are working closely with the Jordanian authorities to take the body of the deceased back to India. The man’s family has been informed of his death and all possible consular assistance is being provided.’ According to a letter sent by the Indian Embassy in Amman to the family of the deceased, he was a resident of Kerala, who had gone to Jordan on a tourist visa with three others. The Jordanian security forces reportedly shot the man when he was trying to illegally cross the country’s border with one of his companions. Both were trying to enter the Israeli border from Jordan. The deceased has been identified as Thomas Gabriel Pereira, 47, a resident of Thumba near Thiruvananthapuram. Another man named Edison, 43, who was accompanying the deceased, was reportedly injured by the bullets of the Jordanian security forces. Edison is also a native of Thumba and returned to his home in Kerala two days ago. The incident took place on February 10, five days after they left for Jordan. Both Thomas and Edison, hailing from the fishermen community, were autorickshaw drivers. According to Thomas’ family, they received a letter from the Indian Embassy in Amman, Jordan, which said, ‘Thomas and another person were trying to illegally cross the Jordanian border in Karakak district. The security forces tried to stop them but they did not listen to the warning. The guards opened fire on them. A bullet hit Thomas in the head and he died on the spot.’ The letter sent by Pradeep Kumar, an attachĂ© at the Indian Embassy in Jordan, said that Indian officials would visit the hospital to verify Thomas’ identity. After verification, arrangements will be made to bring Thomas’ body to India. The letter asked the family to share the details of Thomas’ identity card. The families of Thomas and Edison in Kerala said that both of them were among the four people who had gone to Jordan on a tourist visa on February 5. They were helped by a Keralite working in Jordan. Jordan’s Karakak district borders the Dead Sea in the west. Google Maps shows that the Israeli border is very close to Karakak. According to Edison’s family, after he was injured by the bullet, the Jordanian security forces kept him in a camp and got him treated. A relative of Edison said, ‘He was shot on the seashore. Later he realised that he was in a security forces camp where he was treated after being injured by a bullet. After a few days he was put in a jail in Jordan and later sent back to India.
