
Pune: The death of Vaishnavi Hagawane, the younger daughter-in-law of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) official Rajendra Hagawane in Pune, Maharashtra, has come into discussion. It was reported that Vaishnavi Hagawane had committed suicide. But after the postmortem report, it is now being claimed that Vaishnavi was murdered. Beating wounds and red marks were found on Vaishnavi’s body. Both Rajendra Hagawane and his son Sushil have been absconding since the incident. Party president and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the police have been asked to deploy additional teams to arrest them if needed. Hagawane’s second son, Shashank, has been arrested.
This incident took place in the family of Rajendra Hagawane, an official of Nationalist Congress Party of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, in Mulshi taluka of Pune. It was claimed that Vaishnavi, the wife of Rajendra Hagawane’s younger son Shashank, had committed suicide. But after the postmortem report, it has been suspected that Vaishnavi was murdered.
In this case, the police have arrested Vaishnavi’s husband Shashank and her mother-in-law and brother-in-law. It is reported that her father-in-law and brother-in-law are absconding. Rajendra Hagwane is a big name in Pune politics, especially in Mulshi. But the disclosure of such an incident in his own house has created a stir. Surprise is being expressed that such an incident took place at the house of the leadership group.
Vaishnavi’s parents have made serious allegations against her in-laws. At the time of marriage, we gave 51 tolas of gold, a Fortuner car and many other things in dowry. Vaishnavi’s father has alleged that his daughter is still being pressured for money.
Vaishnavi’s father has alleged that her husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law, who have been arrested, are being given VIP facilities in police custody.
It is alleged that in August 2023, when Vaishnavi was pregnant, Shashank doubted her character and beat her and threw her out of the house. After this, on 27 November 2023, Vaishnavi, fed up with this harassment, attempted suicide by consuming poisonous medicine. Vaishnavi recovered after treatment and was sent to her in-laws’ house, but the harassment did not stop.
After this, Shashank demanded two crore rupees from Vaishnavi’s father to buy land. When he did not get the money, he threatened and beat Vaishnavi. In March 2025, Vaishnavi was beaten by her mother-in-law and sister-in-law and she left her in-laws’ house. Shashank told that Vaishnavi hanged herself on 16 May 2025. She was found unconscious in Chelaram Hospital and doctors declared her dead.
Pune Police gave information about this case in a press conference. Assistant Commissioner of Police Sunil Kurade said that three teams have been formed to search for Rajendra Hagwane. He will be arrested soon.
The police clarified, “There is no pressure on us. We have not received any call from anyone, a woman has met an unfortunate and extremely brutal end. So we are taking this incident very seriously.
The police also said that after the post-mortem report, we have added section 304. Also, a case has been registered under section 80 (2), 108 of IPC for dowry. In this, Vaishnavi’s husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law have been sent to police custody till 21st.
On the other hand, Maharashtra Women’s Commission Chairperson Rupali Chakankar said that Vaishnavi’s 10-month-old baby girl is currently with Hagwane’s relatives and will be handed over to Vaishnavi’s parents. Chakankar is from NCP. Pawar said, immediately after knowing about the incident, I called the Police Commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad and asked to take strict action. Three teams have been formed to trace Rajendra and Sushil and I have instructed the police to deploy more teams if needed.
