Ukraine Hits Russian Airbases and Jets in Big Drone Attack

As the war between Russia and Ukraine gets worse, Ukraine carried out a major drone attack on Sunday. This strike damaged around 40 Russian military planes and several airbases. The attack was in response to Russia’s overnight drone strikes on Ukraine.

A Ukrainian security official told the AP news agency that Ukrainian drones hit 40 military bombers. This came after Russia had launched its biggest drone attack on Kyiv, where Ukraine said it shot down almost 500 drones.

The Ukrainian Air Force also said that Russia fired seven missiles, but Ukraine was able to shoot down three of them. One missile hit a military training area in Ukraine, killing 12 soldiers.

Videos posted by Russian media showed Ukrainian drones hitting Russian airbases. In one video shared by RT, the governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobzev, recorded drones flying over a military base in Siberia.

According to Ukraine’s security service (SBU), Ukrainian drones hit important Russian bombers like the Tu-95 and Tu-22. These planes are used by Russia to launch long-range missile attacks on Ukraine.

Ukraine also sent drones to attack Olenya air base in Murmansk. This is one of Russia’s most important airbases and is known for having planes that can carry nuclear weapons.

Earlier today, videos showing drones attacking Russian airbases were shared widely on social media platform X. Although these videos haven’t been fully verified, Ukrainian officials did confirm the attack.

Just last week, Russia fired 367 drones and missiles at cities in Ukraine. These attacks killed 13 people, including three children in the Zhytomyr region.

Russia Admits Drone Attack Happened

After local Russian governors mentioned the attack, Russia’s defence ministry admitted that some of their military planes caught fire due to Ukrainian drones.

“Several planes in Murmansk and Irkutsk regions caught fire after drones launched from nearby areas hit the airfields,” Russia’s defence ministry said on Telegram.

They also said no one was hurt and that some people involved in the drone attacks were arrested.
